What File Format Do Tattoo Artists Need?
Artists are flexible — but the difference between a crisp file and a blurry screenshot shows up in your stencil. Here's what to send, at what resolution, and why a printed copy at real size beats everything.
The short version
A high-resolution PNG or JPG (2000 px+ on the long side) is enough for almost every artist. Clean black-and-white linework is the most useful single thing you can add. Vector files (EPS/SVG) are a bonus — infinitely scalable for big pieces — but nobody will turn away a sharp PNG.
Resolution: the only spec that matters
Stencils are printed at real size, so your file needs enough pixels to print cleanly: aim for 300 DPI at the printed size. A 10 cm forearm piece needs ~1200 px; a full back piece deserves 3000 px+. If you zoom to the size it'll be inked and edges look soft, the artist's thermal printer will make them softer.
Why greyscale linework helps
The transfer stencil is essentially a line drawing. If you can supply the design AND a black-and-white outline version, the artist skips a conversion step and your linework intentions are unambiguous — which lines are structural, which shading is soft. Print it at real size
Bring a paper copy printed at the size you want the tattoo. It ends the "bigger or smaller?" conversation instantly, lets you tape it to your arm in the mirror, and gives the artist a physical reference to size the stencil against. Any home printer is fine.
